I'm  one of those frustrated Flyer owners.  I haven't even delved into
the bug ridden world of audio non-linear editing yet but getting my
animations to clip has been a challenge.

I had to sell my PAR to get all I needed to use the flyer and still
don't have a dedicated scsi-2 for the audio but I am primarily and
animator.  I have to bid a rather simple 30 sec spot next seek and have to
decide if I can get the hd and do it.  The job will pay for the drive and
some but I still have big problems with the video.

I only got the quantum 2 gigers because I am doing mostly these ten
second logos but the drives weren't supported by the flyer even though
they were approved but had to go back for 6 weeks while NT and Quantum
worked out a revision.  I finally got some anims going to clip through flyer
(which takes like 40 secs on my system where I used to save framestore and
compile them with the PAR in about 5 secs each).  I dare not render
directly to clip because it doesn't seme to append. If there is crash (I
got rid of most crashes by not running any commodities including my
beloved Q-Mouse) I have to start rendering all over and it is hard to
tell from the flyer editor what the last frame rendered was.  Anyway I find
that the quality of the video clips were poor.  Finally there is this
High Q5 mode that I finnally find out how to  get to on capture but now I
am finding out that you can't get it from LW or arexx IFF2clip.  All they
would have to do is write another arexx command for appending the next
field to clip that uses the HighQ5 compression instead of the standard
play which my drives don't seem to get good playaback from.

I can't seem to communicate all this that well with tech support.  I
understand that the flyer is primarily for nop-linear video editoring.
 They certainly have a long way to go till that part of the software
up to  snuff.  I bought the Flyer primarily so I could get clean
animations without the motion JPEG artifacts that show up more on logo
anims that have simple lines.  More complex imagery requires more
compression on the PAR but the artifacts are less noticible. I also
wanted to have a more digital video environment for my work and be able
to do non-linear editing easily.  Animators with Quantum 2 gigers are way
down on their list of bug swatting and software design!

I have 8k tied up in this upgrade but still have to usually rent  back
my PAR to do a job which is a grand pain in the butt.  Occasionaly
an anim seems to behave well with my setup and I can use  what it
does now.  But most of the time my clips are a color flickering mess.

One tech told me that LW4.0, when it finally arives, it won't have my
problem fixed!  If they just fix the arexx command I would be happy.


I find the video playback very unpredictable.  I have to recalibrate
often.  The system is not rock solid.   I captured a clip from a client
yesterday for a project.  I used HQ5 and it looked good.  Latter in the
day I got to working with it and the playback was unusable.  Stuttering and
breakups.  Now I have to tell the client  to bring the original back for
recapture.

Don't even get me started on tpaint for the A2000.  NT says that my
combination of mega chip and the G-Force 040 is the source of a lot of my
problems!!!  Duhhhh?   This was the setup of choice fo animators on a
budget.  Faster than the 4000 and cheaper than a P&P or a 4000 with a
warp, I chose the GVP.  Even Lee Stratahan had a column in VTU about how
it was the best setup for LW.  Last fall I was at toaster U and Lee was
telling us all to sell our PARs as the they would be a dime a dozen as
the flyer was going to be the animation machine of chioce.  I had a buyer
lined up for it at top dollar for 4 months but wouldn't sell it till I
took delivery finally on the flyer.  Selling it was a big mistake as the
price for used pars and the 1.7 drive have not dropped that much and I
could really still be using it almost every day.  the Flyer is still in
beta as far as I'm concerned.

This whole situation is getting a little old and holding up my business.
Everyday I have thoughts of just selling the flyer and getting a PC and a
Perception but I am reading that people are having trouble with that
also.  the only saveing grace to that route would be that I could use one
of the scsi-2's that I paid way to much for for the Perception and
theother one would make a great drive for my system.
